JJ Putz had a terrible outing last night (granted many of the hits were seeing-eye) and he is really pitching poorly this year.
Its more than that - the bottom line is that he must be compared to Heilman because that is the guy he replaced. The bottom line is that both give up a ton of runners and far too many walks (Putz did that last year as well) to be consistently effective.
Relievers are funky in that they are not generally good year after year. Putz seems to be of that ilk - and not of the elite closer ilk.
The Mets will have bullpen problems if K-Rod is the only trustworthy guy out there.
The most stark difference between the pitchers is their pay. Heilman made $1.2 mil last year which allowed the Mets to sit him if he was ineffective. However, with Putz making $6 million, it is a steep price for a guy sitting in the pen day in day out.
