There is usually an issue in assessing NFL contracts because a team can cut a guy whenever it wants - I.E. no guarantees.
However, when it comes to QB contracts, the rule is out the window.
With that intro, I must try to explain Eli Manning's contract.
Based on traditional statistical analysis, Eli is not a top of the line NFL QB. He throws bad interceptions and has had a mediocre to bad QB rating ever since becoming a starter. Last season was his first QB rating inside the top 20 among qualified leaders! That is pathetic! Last season, he wasn't even in the top 10!
However, (please note, as much as it hurts every fiber of my green-blooded being, I am about to say something good about the Giants) Eli Manning is a really good NFL quarterback. He is not his brother; however, he is scrappy, tenacious and most importantly, he is a winner.
I would describe him as Brett Favre light. He is erratic at times, but, he often gets the job done, and, he has already won the big one.
Perhaps another analogy would be Eli:Peyton::Jeter:Pujols. Peyton and Pujols have both won a title, are the elite of their league and truly dominate. Eli and Jeter both have won, are kind of scrappy and often play well on the big stage. They both make a ton of money and that may have to do with NYC; however, if they win, regardless of how they pull it off, they have earned the big contracts.
Eli's contract is very hefty and he probably is overpaid for playing in New York, but, he is no slouch under center and he is certainly worth far more than Matthew Stafford - but that story is for another day.
