Yahoo! Sports has reported that Andruw Jones will be bought out.
There is no question in my mind that the Yankees should take a look. Sign the guy to a minimum deal and see if he can regain his old form.
The Yankees need a CF and having a 5 time former All Star with a heck of a lot to play for try out for the team at the league minimum is a no-brainer.
1 thing - if he has a good spring, don't be stupid and give him a 2 year $20 million deal in classic Yankee form!

P.S. Sorry about the lack of postage recently, my upcoming wedding is taking its toll.
You are quite incorrect. Please link to the report that says this.
ReplyDeleteIn actuality, Yahoo! is reporting (as well as other news outlets) that Jones' contract will be reworked so that his money is deferred over a few years, thereby making him more trade-worthy. He will not be bought out, but they do plan on moving him.

Yahoo! does say that he may potentially be released, although that has yet to occur. I doubt they will want to cut him outright and eat all that cash. They will attempt to trade him first, and the Mets, Reds, and Braves are expected to be contacted about him.

Again, Jones has not yet been bought out, nor do the Dodgers plan on taking that path. They've reworked his deal to either make him trade-eligible, or so that they won't take as big a hit with his salary this year. Yahoo! can speculate that he could potentially be released, but that's pure speculation, and unlikely to happen.
Oh, and the Yanks have no need to sign him. They have so many outfielders already. Jones has looked steadily worse the past few years, and they have no reason to spend any money on a guy who will only further crowd that logjam.
ReplyDeleteOuch, you just got blithering retorted. But yeah, we don't really need him, let's just focus on getting rid of Matsui for anything (although if the Dodgers want to trade Jones for Matsui that works for me). And dude, mazel tov!
ReplyDeleteDon't denigrate Matsui. He remains a dangerous hitter. Trade him for some useful players, not dead meat like Jones. His legs are a problem in the outfield, but he will prove valuable to the Yankees if he is used appropriately in the mix with all the other DH's and outfielders.
ReplyDeleteSorry about my silence lately. I was away.
