The Pansification of American Kids Continues

This is unrelated to NY Sports, but I found it pretty interesting and worthy of discussion. Recently, if you haven't heard, a Dallas Girls high school team beat another team 100-0. This set off a wave of ill-sentiment founded on 'sportsmanship.' The dean of the school then issued a public apology to the other school/team and offered to officially forfeit the game. The coach of the winning team then posted a statement online in which he said he disagreed with the apology and would not apology for the way he coached/his team played, which done the right way. The coach was then fired. Meanwhile, the losing team apparently hit a sympathy/pity nerve with the media/public, and went on a publicity tour which involved their appearance on good morning america and other such shows. Also, the losing team, which has been blown out in every game they've played, was removed from the high school basketball division in which they had been playing.

What do you think of what happened here?

  1. It depends on one big factor:
Did the winning team keep it's starters in the whole game? If so, then the apology was deserved. If not, I have ZERO problem with what happened. If the coach played the last 5 girls on the bench, who probably don't get to play much, and were looking for a chance to impress and show their stuff, then what's the problem? The team that lost doesn't belong in the league.

  2. I think it's absolutely ridiculous. The team was up 88-0 after 3 quarters and only scored 12 in the 4th.
But the pity-party is what gets me. A team loses 100-0 and then gets on good morning america? Are you kidding me? It makes no sense at all. This is lovable loser meeting the ninth circle of hell.
I have a huge problem with the philosophy that sports teaches integrity and unity...no, sports are not about that at all. If sports really performed that task, then why are so many superstar athletes clearly moral and ethical cretans?
Parents and teachers are the ones who should teach morality and ethics. Sports is about competition and trying to achieve greatness or excellence.
