There is a truly vital piece by Peter Gammons on ESPN (“Words From Decades Ago”)that is a must read by all sports fans, but especially baseball fans, nailing the absurdity of the steroids story coverage these last few years. Anyone who reads the piece and still thinks only baseball has been afflicted by PEDS (and only since the strike ended) will have the scales removed from his eyes. Moreover, the “innocence” of the owners, managers and commissioners is exposed as being on a par with the shock expressed by the police commissioner of “Casablanca.”
Let’s demand that the steroid crusade stop. Barry Bonds is not going to get convicted. Our government should not be wasting money or effort on something so frivolous, nay downright ridiculous. Agreed that high schoolers should be stopped from using dangerous substances. But that is best dealt with on the school level by school boards and coaches.
As one who cares primarily about baseball, I have been especially annoyed by the obvious realization that though football is far more PED affected, that sport has gotten a free pass in all the fussing over steroids.
Let’s just play ball.
