Rose Gambles Others Juice

I doubt A-rod was thinking about the Hall when he had his pants down at his ankles and his cousin was sticking a needle into his tushi. However, the impact of those syringes is quite clear now.

I was listening to the radio the other day and the debate arose about Pete Rose getting into the Hall and the question was, how could one suggest that he get in and all the steroid guys not get in?

I think the answer is that, players usually get into the Hall based on their statistics (aside from Bill Mazeroski and Phil Rizzuto). Pete Rose did cheat in a very real way and the cardinal rule of sports is that one can not gamble while participating in the game. However, there is no way his gambling made his stats get better. In theory, there is nothing wrong with betting on one's own team to win a game because that is your goal either way. Betting is prohibited because of the gravity of betting against one's own team (and that is surely a grave act).

Steroids are different. Aside from changing head, arm and nut sizes, the juice raises statistics, thus increasing the likelihood of getting into the Hall. Simple enough.

Now for a trivia question...

Over the last 3 seasons, who has the most RBIs within the below group of players?
1) Carlos Lee
2) Mark Teixeira
3) Raul Ibanez
4) Manny Ramirez

  1. You read Matthew Berry. Do you watch Privileged?

Here's a better question: of those four players, who has the lowest OPS+ over the past three years? He also has the lowest career batting average of the group.

  2. There is one cardinal rule in baseball: never do anything to hurt your own team.

There is nothing worse than betting against your own team (except actively throwing a game).

Rose bet against his own team.

The worst any juicer did was cheat to win. No real fan can hold it against a player for trying his hardest to win.

Rose should never be admitted to the Hall because he cheated against his team. He was trying to lose.

  3. Henry, actually, according to the Dowd Report on the Pete Rose Betting Scandal, Pete Rose NEVER bet against his own team.

  4. I do not believe he bet on his own team (which he finally admitted in 2004) without betting against his own team.

The logic of gambling demands that one win his bet. The game loses its meaning as a mere game. Why would anyone have a psychological need to bet in favor of his own team? The gambler needs to win his bet above anything else.

I cannot believe Rose bet only for his team.

I may not believe the specifics any juicer presents regarding his steroid use, but I know he did what he did in order to do his best.

  5. My guess is Rose bet certain games based on inside info he had. And the games he chose TOO bet - maybe he goes with a closer for an extra inning - so yes he's trying to win THAT game - but likely at the expense of other games AND potential player injuries.
