Rutgers was considered a team on the up and up with a solid program and a stern but well-liked coach in Greg Schiano. However, last year was incredibly inconsistent and this year, without the services of Ray Rice, got off to an awful 1-5 start.
Remember, most teams in major conferences play lighter schedules in the beginning of their schedules to rack up a few wins in preparation for the serious - in conference - schedule. What happened to Rutgers usually ends up being a 3-9 or 2-10 season.
The team only beat the lowly Morgan State Bears in their first 6 games. The Bears lost to the likes of Towson, Hampton and Norfolk State. It was not exactly an impressive win.
And yet, the Scarlet Knights were able to regroup, win their last 6 games against their Big East opponents (which happens to be a poor BCS conference this year)!
There was the big wins against Pitt and South Florida (for the second year in a row!). But, the final piece to the turn around came tonight when Rutgers absolutely slaughtered Louisville. Granted that Louisville is having a very down year, but to be up 49-0 at half time is pretty wild. The Knights didn't core a touchdown on 2 drives. 1 was a 3 and out and the other was an attempt at not running up the score as Rutgers turned the ball over on downs at the Louisville 9 yard line. If you ask me, I think it is more insulting to go for it on 4th down that to kick the field goal. It shows the opponent that you have no need to score in such an obvious scoring situation.
One last point on the game, the Rutgers kicker - San San Te - had 9 points in the game. For that to be 9 extra point is quite amazing.
I know college football is not a big sport in NY; however, Rutgers is the local team to root for and what they accomplished in the second half of this season is rather impressive.
