Here is my theory, both Manny and Ortiz have taken steroids for years, both were forced to stop taking the classic stuff in 2004 so they would not get penalized.
They found a new substance, HCG. It is a female hormone they would only use for athletic enhancement purposes.
In 2008, the substance was banned. That is the exact point where Ortiz's statistics went sour. He no longer had the same power or average. This year is more of the same.
Manny, on the other hand, did not stop taking HCG. It continued to help his performance and he was finally caught taking the drug at the beginning of this season.
Sounds logical to me!
