Jeter is known for his .300 seasons, clutch hits and leadership. Of those 3, the only easy attribute to judge is Jeter's batting average. Well, Jeter is now batting comfortably over .300 and has thus had another solid year. Those days in mid August with an average in the low .280s are well over and Jeter will have his 10th .300 season (out of 13) and 4th in a row. He is a first ballot Hall of Famer (yes, even statistically) and he appears still have a few years left in that

Thank You to AP for the photo of Mr. November (O, shut up Michael Kay) Derek Jeter
body. In those 13 seasons, Jeter has missed 15 or more games only once. He takes good care of himself, but the Yankees may want to look for a position that gives Jeter more of a break in the field (after next season or the one after that) if they want his bat in the lineup after 2011. I know that is a few years away, but the Yankees need to prepare now so Jeter's body doesn't quickly fall apart.
Regarding the team with a shot at the playoffs this year, (that would be the Mets), they may want to start playing a lot better or they will be home in October again this year. The Phillies will be in first place after tonight if the current scores hold up and C.C. is pitching a huge game in Chicago against Ryan Dempster. The NL is far more exciting these days than the American League because it is fun when teams fall apart (unless you are a fan of those teams (Mets, D-Backs and Brewers). A couple of Met starters need to step up and throw 8+ innings a piece in their upcoming starts for the Mets to hold on!

ANdy is 13-14 - this would be his first career losing season.
ReplyDeleteJeter is first ballot HOF - no doubt. But he's still not in the class of Mo.
Mets are so hard to watch. Willie Harris has killed the mets in a way i have never seen a defensive OFer kill a team - last year with the braves and repeatdly this year with amazing catches.
pettitte will hopefully realize it's time to retire altho with the pay pitchers get, its hard to turn down another season if a team antes up -- even if you look way pasy ure prime on the mound.
ReplyDeleteas to jeter, i question whether he'd be a first round hall of famer if he wasn't in NY. either way he'll need 3000 hits to get in without an allout effort by NY sportscasters (a la Phil R)
1) the mets will blow this; if they can't hit odalis perez, they don't deserve to make it.
ReplyDelete2) jeter is only a HOF (at all, not just 1st ballot) because he was lucky enough to be a part of several insanely talented teams that won world series, garnering him much acclaim. as it currently stands, he's not in the top 50 in ANY statistical category all time. so all the unmeasurable clutch in the world wouldn't matter if his whole career had been seasons like this one that were long over by september.
3) it's been a great career for pettite. props for coming out and pitching so well and so consistently. may you teach the next generation well (and without the syringes roger introduced you to)
bring back willy r.
ReplyDeleteAri, Jeter will get to 3,000 hits, that is automatic first ballot. Clutch helps but 3,000 is what really matters.
ReplyDeleteHorace, I hope you are kidding. The team actually listens to Manuel!

ari - i would venture to say that the yankees teams of late are skill wise more talented then the championship run of the nineties. those teams won because of clutch hits, guts, and the little things. they did not win because of the 7000-run hr.
ReplyDeleteso your arguement that jeter then won because he was on insanely talented teams is false.
he would not go in to the hall even becuase of that it would be because of the 3000 hits which if you pull up his stats its amazing how evry year even in a crappy one like this he is somewhere near 200 hits.
in comparison to a-rod, who by the way has a shot at 3K also, has not won a thing and is arguablly one of the smallest performers in big time situations.
anyway, ari better go over your records again.
Agreed. Ari, 1st of all it doesn't matter, since he's going to get 3,000 hits and therefore be an auto 1st ballot in 99% of the voters' minds anyway.
ReplyDeleteBut what you're saying about Jeter being lucky to be on good teams and therefore get acclaim is insane. You make it sound like if he was some barely consequential piece to the puzzle like Brian Boehringer. I'm just going to assume you're a bitter jealous Met fan who wishes Jose Reyes accomplishes half as much in his career as Derek Jeter has already to this point.
And yeah, let's go Phillies, and let's go Brewers. And in the AL, let's go Rays, and let's go Twins/White Sox (starting Friday).
I always agreed with Ari about Jeter. Until the July 1, 2004 game vs BOston when he dove into the stands. I know that was just one instance, but in that game, Nomar was sitting in the dugout and didnt play. Jeter showed GUTS. Jeter is clutch, and a winner. And if Phil Rizzuto, pee wee reese, luis aparicio, lou boudreau, etc are HOFers, then jeter certainly is
