So the Rangers and Devils played tonight, and guess what happened...
The Devils goaltending let them down again. It basically goes like this - a back up goalie can be very good for a period, but, as the saying goes about QBs and kickers in the NFL, you need to have a short memory, and I think Kevin Weekes remembers like an elephant. When he gives up 1, he just can't refocus and they come in bunches.
The Devils are stuck because they really have nowhere to go to find a goalie and they never have any intention of using a backup much due to the ridiculous goodness of Marty Brodeur, thus they thought they could deal with a weak backup. It seems to be biting them in the butt right now.
On the other hand, the Rangers, when absolutely dominated in the first period, managed to hold the Devils to 1 goal (including an outstanding stop on a breakaway shot off the stick of Zach Parise that Lundquist was able to stop!) and then exploded for 4 in the second.
The Rangers are clearly the class of the division (especially with Marty out) and I wouldn't be surprised if the Devils and Rangers meet once again in the playoffs as the 2-7 or 1-8 series.

I hate to say it, but I think the Devils playoff run is over. THey were having too many injuries to start with and THEN brodeur gets injured on top of that.
ReplyDelete"The Devils goaltending let them down again."
ReplyDeleteAgain? Look, Weekes isn't Brodeur, and we don't expect him to be, but until tonight, how has he let us down, exactly?
"they really have nowhere to go to find a goalie..."
Um... Edmonton?
"thus they thought they could deal with a weak backup."
Weekes is a GREAT backup. Dude, seriously, what are you talking about? Fact is, he's still a backup, and he isn't starter-caliber, but he's a great backup. Any team would be lucky to have him, and any team would be screwed to lose their starter. This was not poor management by the Devils.

I still say the Rangers are overrated. The Devs have been decimated by injuries (seriously, it's nuts), and if they make the playoffs, they should thank the hockey Gods. But I don't think the Rangers are this good, and I never thought they were. It's still early in the season. I'm patiently waiting for the slipping to begin.
good win for the rangers...didnt think they were capable of scoring 5 goals. i still think they need some more offensive skill upfront. they are pretty tight cap-wise so they might have to use what theyve got. as long as lundqvist is on his game they have a shot.
ReplyDeleteThe rangers arent the class of the east and they wont even win their division with Pittsburgh and crosby and malkin who over the past few years have gone on tairs in the 2nd half and they also have a stud goalie.
ReplyDeleteLundqvist when needed most has tanked whether in big playoff games or blowing a 5-0 lead.
Yaros u once again showed your lack of hockey knowledge, to reiterate what "jersey" said above is that there are many avialble goalies. Edmonton has extra, Nikolai Khabibulin could be had. Plenty out there its just the devils choice.
Weekes is a good backup to fill in for a game here and there. He has had playoff experience and he has played for all 3 NY teams.
off the derech - the only reason the rangers have more than 15 points thus far is because of lunqvist - ur an idiot, and if u like fleury in a big spot, give me a break.
ReplyDeleteplus, learn how to spell, its "tear" not "tair"
Mandelbaum im done with college so no more spelling for me.
ReplyDeleteBesides for that lundqvist can be the best goalie in the league for 56 minutes of the game and he then could give up 3 goals in 51 seconds or 2 goals in 10 and later 2 goals in 14 seconds. Both of those happened and the latter in the playoffs.
Hes alot like Marty Turco a great regular season goalie but eventually he cant hold on, Pittsburgh gasme 1 last year he was eaten alive.
