Brian Giles was put on waivers today. ESPN is reporting that the Padres are trying to work out a deal with the Red Sox. I have no idea where he would play, but he can still hit. ESPN's report did not make much sense, the report indicated that the Sox are worried about Ortiz and Mike Lowell's health. With Giles only capable of playing the outfield and Jason Bay in left, Jacoby Ellsbury (the player most loved by the Red Sox brass) in center and J.D. Drew in right, where would Mr. Giles play. Perhaps DH; however, I don't think he has enough power to play that position - especially as a lefty in Fenway.
Note: Be aware that Giles' power from 1999-2002 was in all likelihood steroid based as his home run production was cut in half when testing began in 2003. We fans are not as stupid as the players think. Maybe he should have stopped using the juice the same year as Rich Aurilia (the most obvious steroid case outside of a 500+ home run guy ever) in 2001, then maybe some fans would have been fooled.

you sure that giles isn't just another one who fell into the san diego pit? after all - that happened in 2003, the year his numbers receded.
ReplyDeletenot saying he's not a steroid user, just that a return to a normal size ballpark that doesn't destroy hitter's careers might reveal some remaining talent.
Very valid point. I do agree that the ball park saps some home run production from a player; however, the likelihood of such a dramatic nosedive is unlikely.
