According to Brian Schneider (WFAN), Pelfrey admittedly did not have his best stuff last night. However, one key factor to his success last night was the change in fastball variation to get strike one. Most pitchers work off the fastball and start batters with that pitch to get strike 1 (getting strike 1 completely changes an at-bat in the pitcher's favor). Pelfrey had been using his four seam fastball (fastest pitch with little movement) to get strike one; last night he adjusted that approach and began using his 2 seam fastball (a couple of MPH slower but with sinking movement) to get strike one. This was a successful approach as he only had 1 walk and limited his pitch count.
Note: Pelfrey has pitched into the 7th inning in 8 out of his last 9 starts.
