I don't really understand why the Yankees didn't take a flyer on this guy. They need inning eaters since Ponson doesn't give great length and Dan Giese and his 1-5 career record is not exactly high quality. The Yankees had rights to Livan before any NL team. He would have cost the minimum...hopefully the Yankees will not regret passing up on him. He is by no means great, but definitely serviceable.

True, but the Yankees already have a number of better no-risk starting options. Hughes and Pavano are coming off the DL soon, Kennedy is back Friday, Eric Milton & Zambrano are also rehabbing in their system, Aceves was doing well until last week in AAA, and Giese has been outstanding out of the pen. Hernandez might not have hurt, but the Yanks already have enough fliers to take them through the last 45 games. And Ponson has been doing MUCH better than Hernandez. Switching the two would do much more harm than good.
ReplyDeleteI think Livan in better than almost any option they have on the farm. Ponson should stay in the rotation. But aside from him they have 2 empty spots - the spot Giese has right now and the spot Joba had.
ReplyDeleteNote: They do have a lot of off days in the coming weeks. However, Joe Girardi said today that he intends to give Andy Pettite, who has pitched badly, some extra rest using those days. Only time will tell.
