Thanks to new found confidence in his fastball, Mike Mussina is having his best year as a Yankee and perhaps the best year of his career. If he makes the hall of fame, he will have to thank Joe Girardi immensely for demanding that he throw his fastball at players' belt buckles. Mussina's ball naturally moves in on right handed hitters. That knuckle change Mussina has mastered is only effective if it can't be sat on. A fastball boring in on a hitter's hands is the most effective way to stop a hitter from leaning out over the plate and pounding his knuckle curve. Mussina is either very good or very bad. This is exclusively based on his fastball command. He may win 20 this year and will likely come in the top four in the chase for the Cy Young in the AL (Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay and Joe Saunders).
