Two reasons,
1) He is a Boris client. The Pirates wanted to get rid of him while he actually still had value. A player who is a Boris client often devalues during his final year under contract (Nady has one more year of arbitration).
2) The Yankees were willing to trade Tabata who was playing poorly and has had some behavior problems.
