Pelfrey Pitches Gem!

There is not much to say about this one. He pitched a really solid complete game - gave the bullpen a rest and continues to show that he has matured into a stud young pitcher. The Mets should think about locking him up now the way they did with Wright and Reyes; he is worth the risk of a long term contract that will cost much less now than if he is signed later on in his career.

If Pelfrey's post May stats are extended to a full season, then he would have a 3.58 ERA, 188 innings pitched and a 21-5 record. Obviously those Cy Young worthy numbers are unlikely; however, the nearly half season Pelfrey has put together is the main reason the Mets are in first place. Delgado has played a big part as well; however, pitching wins games and Pelfrey has been on the winning end a lot since the start of June. Sign him now and massive arbitration issues will not exist in years to come.

  1. I'd like to point out that I was one of the few Mets fans last year who didn't want to give up on Pelfrey. Too many other top pitcher have had BRUTAL starts to their careers - glavine, maddux, unit, santana to name a few. As for locking him up - with pitchers and long term contracts - i dunno....

  2. All I know is that Carlos Silva is being paid $11 million to be average. If he is signed young for say, 6 or 7 million dollars a year it may be worthwhile?

  3. Pelfrey has another 3 or 4 years till free agency. I would like to see him have a full year of success before giving him Carlos Silva money. When will teams learn that paying that kind of money for mediocrity never pays off??? Thankfully the Mets havent done that sicne the Kevin Appier disaster which they turned into the Mo Vaughn disaster.

  4. My point was that you don't need to pay him Silva money if you sign him now.

  5. I would say 6 years for $30 million or so.
