Mets Closer is Pedro?

Evan Roberts of WFAN has suggested that Pedro Martinez should become the Mets new closer is Billy Wagner is seriously injured. This idea has some rational because the Mets bullpen is very weak and Pedro has failed as a starter this year. Other aging pitchers have done this same thing including Curt Schilling and John Smoltz. Pedro going all out for 1 inning may actually be an effective solution to the Mets pathetic inconsistancy.

  1. Yea, but look at Pedro's first inning numbers. He usually needs to settle into a groove, which means he wouldnt be effective in a 1 inning situation

  2. That's very valid and was brought up. One suggestion would be (and this has been done before with other starters working relief), you have him pitch a simulater inning at full speed in the bullpen (perhaps even two) and then pitch his "3" inning as the closer.

  3. Pedro has actually had a few starts where he would pitch well for 3 innings and then collapse. He has been so awful as a starter (his 5 innings, 3 runs was considered good by his 2008 standards) that you got nothing to lose. If not Pedro I'd like to see Kunz. Anyone but Heilman actually.

  4. I think Kunz is not a bad option either (because he saved games in college); but, Pedro's savvy could likely get him through save situations. He likely wears down in the middle of games because he is an old man.
