With no declared starter facing the effective Jeremy Guthrie and the shaky Darrell Rasner pitching against Daniel Cabrera who is 3-0 against the Yankees this year and is just nasty when he has control, the Yankees need a great performance out of Moose Friday night. It is a must win in that the Yankees need momentum going into the Red Sox series next week. Losing a series to the Orioles for the second time in a month is not positive momentum. Also, the Yankees must keep Boston's lead at a working margin so losing ground when playing the O's is a huge no-no!
Notes:
Matt Cain did not get a win tonight in a game that optimizes his career. Last year he had an awful record for a bad team, but had a great ERA. This year he has a mediocre record with a solid ERA. Brian Wilson gave up a 3 run jack in the 9th to blow the save. It is rough to be Matt Cain these days!
There are 3 reasons the (Devil) Rays have been so good this year. J.P. Howell and his sub-3 ERA, Dan Wheeler and his sub-3 ERA and Old Man Troy who has stabilized the bullpen and may be the reason for reasons 1 and 2. The Yankees and Red Sox always knew that the Rays had solid young starters; however, making those pitchers work and getting to the Rays middle relief used to be like playing with tennis balls and an aluminum bat. However, this year the Rays pen has pitched fabulously and the confident aura within the Rays clubhouse is obvious. That breeds winning!

Freaking Brian Wilson, I need wins for Matt Cain to make my late push in fantasy.

I give you no pity! This is to be expected from Matt Cain.

I had Matt Cain last year. Uch. Feel bad for him.
ReplyDeleteJust got back from 3 games at the Trop, rubbing elbows with Cena hehe. You forgot Grant Balfour - he's been unhittable overall for TB (even though he lost yesterday) and bradford was a pickup for them. Fans in Tampa are really starting to get pumped up about their team.
Sussman, the bullpen in general has been key. The guys I mentioned have been best.

Balfour has been the best - he just hasnt been there all year - WHIP under 1, 13 Ks/9 innings
ReplyDeleteIf you want we can add him to the list.
