I have never seen an organization look so bad in my life (lets not talk politics here because I am referring to sports, otherwise there would be a long list). The IOC continues to maintain that a passport printed by the cheating Chinese government that is willing to do anything to win gymnastics medals is sufficient evidence of age verification. Hello! Doesn't the IOC realize that it is trusting the people who are out to get the organization. Of course China will have "proper" documentation for its athletes. If the U.S. wanted to have a 14 year old compete, it could create a passport indicating the proper age too. It is almost laughable that the IOC trusts China!
Also, allowing athletes born in a country to compete for another is pretty ridiculous. This Arab country Bahrain uses athletes from different countries to create a competitive Olympic team. The athletes smile for a Bahrain passport photo and become naturalized citizens. The U.S. does it too - rarely, but Bernard Lagat is Kenyan and runs for the U.S. By the way, he gets pushed around on the track because the other Kenyans don't like what he did (frankly, I embarrassed that he is allowed to compete and I don't blame them).
Lastly, the wrestler who tossed his bronze medal to the floor because he was upset about a ruling in the semi-finals was disqualified ex post facto from the match and lost his medal. He complained to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and the CAS ruled that he is correct in his complaint. The fact that the guy lost the Olympic gold medal based on a bad call is ridiculous. If I put my efforts for 4 years into 1 event and some moron reffing the match blows my dream, I'd get pretty ticked off too. The fact that he was right clearly indicates a need for change in the judging system as well as the need for an arbitration system within the Olympics. The stakes are far to high for such embarrassments to take place. Also, new leadership must be in place for the next Olympics! The IOC is completely incompetent. The only group worse is the one that controls gymnastics. Its a real shame that sports get ruined the way these people manage to destroy them. Just imagine being that wrestler or a gymnast that loses the gold because of a judge who has no experience and seriously has no idea what he/she is doing!

there needs to be a mechanism whereby the process for protesting a refs call doesnt include interfering witht he award ceremony or kicking the ref in the face. i don't agree with the implication that such behaviour is justified even if in response to a bad call.
ReplyDeleteI agree that no physical contact should be made with the ref - ever. But I think leaving a medal on the mat of the wrestling arena is not an inappropriate form of protest. It is in no way violent and certainly gets the point across.
